Botox Q & A

What is Botox for anti-aging?

Early on, Botox was approved for effective treatment of frown lines ("11's") between the brows, laugh lines ("crow's feet") at the outer corners of the eyes, and horizontal creases in the forehead. Amazingly, all of these aging skin signs are effectively softened and smoothed and the underlying muscles become less bulky over time. After an average of 4 - 6 months, the effects start to wear off, and an additional Botox treatment can be performed. As a result, the deeper, permanent lines that can or will occur are prevented and more aggressive anti-aging treatments such as ablative laser resurfacing or a surgical facelift can be avoided.

While there are other ways to keep your skin healthy and slow down the destructive effects of sun and aging, Botox has a uique preventative role in the major changes that we see when collagen starts to age. Botox can help reduce:

  • the dimpled chin
  • vertical neck lines
  • "bunny" lines along the nose
  • vertical lines on the upper lip ("smoker's lines")

Dr. Baron customizes your Botox treatment plan to your unique needs and anti-aging goals after completing a comprehensive skin evaluation. She may also recommend Botox injections for medical purposes to treat a variety of chronic conditions.

What medical conditions can Botox treat?

Botox can be beneficial for preventing chronic migraines in people who experience more than 5 headaches a month. The medication temporarily relaxes the muscles that play a role in migraines and tension headaches.

Over time, Botox injections help prevent the recurrence of headaches. You need fewer injections later in your therapy to achieve your desired results.

Other conditions Dr. Baron can treat with Botox include:

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes you to sweat excessively in your underarms and on your scalp, hands, and/or feet. Botox relaxes the nerves responsible for the excessive sweating when other treatments aren’t working.

Bruxism

Bruxism, clenching or teeth grinding, can cause the abnormal wearing of your teeth and increase your risk for tooth damage and loss. The condition can also lead to persistent jaw pain and a joint disorder. Dr. Baron uses Botox to relax the jaw muscles you use to chew to prevent you from grinding or clenching your teeth, even while you sleep.

Botox injections can also slim your jawline by reducing the size and firmness of your jaw muscles to narrow the contours of a rounded or squared jawline ("chipmunk cheeks").

How long do Botox results last?

You can expect to see a noticeable difference in the appearance of lines and wrinkles 7 - 10 days after treatment.

While the results of Botox injections vary based on the reason for your treatment, many people enjoy benefits that last for up to six months. You may need maintenance injections to retain your youthful appearance or to properly manage an underlying medical issue.
